Thyroid nodules are usually small mass structures formed within the thyroid gland. Although 95-96% are benign, in some cases it is necessary to take samples from nodules to be sure. The best known method for this is ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration biopsy. In this process, liquid is drawn from the nodule with the syringe you know. Although the procedure was performed without anesthesia in the old times, it is more appropriate to perform it with local anesthetics since the patient’s comfort may be impaired and there may be some pain. The opinion of physicians who do not apply anesthesia is that this is not an advantage, as a needle is required for anesthesia. For this, we use a system that applies anesthetic with high pressure under the skin without pain and needles. The patient feels little or no discomfort during this procedure. Another problem is that not enough fluid can be taken to diagnose during the aspiration process. Even in large centers, this rate is at 10%. For the last 1 month, we started our procedures with special paints accompanied by a pathologist. What does this mean? When the sample is taken, our Pathologist immediately looks at the liquid taken under the microscope and informs us whether the liquid taken is sufficient within 5 minutes. If it is insufficient, a new sample can be taken right now. Thus, we aimed to bring our diagnostic rate closer to 100%. However, it should be known that the diagnosis may not be made due to the structure of some nodules. In such cases, we may have to recommend surgery to the patient.
